Pinspiration(s) 1-2/5

At the beginning of each year, Clinton and I make a list of things we want to do through the year. Not to be confused with a typical "Resolution" list of things like "lose weight", "stop smoking", "eat a carrot everyday" or anything like that. Just a list of goals. Some are lofty and some, like this one, are not.

Like approximately 58,966,544,124,589,654 other people, I have a slight addiction to Pinterest. I like to think that I use mine pretty practically, and I don't use it to pin every pretty thing I've ever seen in my life. I only pin things that I can realistically achieve. I have several things pinned that I'm waiting on until we buy a house, mainly just because I don't want to build a piece of furniture or something and then just have to move it. However, I put it on my 2013 list that instead of just "someday pinning" I was going to actually do at least 5 things from Pinterest this year.

The first two I'm going to post were super easy ones but hey - if it's something I pinned and then actually followed through on, it counts!

Pin 1 - The Fruit Saver:

The original pin.
We buy a LOT of produce because I'm not a terribly big meat-eater, and we just prefer fruit and veg for snacks to chips and stuff like that. Sometimes we get a little overzealous in the produce department and wind up with some extra fruit that I have to make smoothies out of or something because it's getting too ripe - so I decided to give this a go. Can't hurt, right?

GUYS. IT TOTALLY WORKS. Seriously. That was my first attempt and not only was the water waxy, but the fruit lasted forever. I left it uneaten for longer than normal just to see if it actually worked and it did not disappoint. I do this with all of our produce now as soon as we get home from the store. I seriously cannot recommend this enough! Oh, and if anyone is wondering - no, the vinegar does not have any effect whatsoever on the taste of the produce. Pretty sweet and if you're not doing this already, I definitely recommend it.

Pin 2 - Love Notes:

I actually pinned this ages ago, but I just never got around to finishing it. I half started it a few months ago and then kept forgetting that I needed ink for our printer, so the frame sat in the spare room just waiting.

 The original pin.

I thought this was super cute - we already leave each other little notes sometimes so I thought having a place for it was a good idea. I knew I wanted to put it in our bedroom, which is full of black furniture, grey linens, and pops of color in the other decor (candles, vases, etc.) so I needed something fairly neutral. I used a black wood frame that I already had, and picked up some printed cardstock on one of my many trips to Hobby Lobby - only later did I realize that I had picked the same cardstock used in the pin - it honestly wasn't my intention, I just picked a neutral one that I thought was pretty! I can't remember where the flowers I used were from - they are something I had leftover from a previous project and I found them in my craft box.

When I sat down at the computer yesterday to finally print out the "I love you because..." part, I ended up getting super frustrated and failing a few test prints, so I just did it the old fashioned way - held the paper up to the computer screen and traced it. I traced with pencil first (so it wouldn't bleed through onto the computer), and then filled it in with a fine tipped permanent marker.

My version now sits on a corner of our dresser in the bedroom - and of course I had to get things started by mentioning my source of inspiration! I think it'll be a fun little thing to have, so I'm happy I finally decided to finish it.

2 down, 3 (or more!) to go. It's the little things, people. :)

The Good In The Bad

It has been a pretty intense month. It's hard to even know where to start.

After some weird bumps showed up on her neck, one of my sisters went to the hospital. There were tests and surgeries and waiting periods and a scary prognosis that turned into an even scarier reality and diagnosis: Hodgkins Lymphoma. Or, to be as succinct as possible: my sister has cancer.

I have been avoiding writing about this because nobody wants to commit to actually typing out those words. My sister has cancer. My fingers press the keys, and a lump swells in my throat. My sister has cancer. There's nothing I can do about it. It is our family's new reality.

As far as my blog is concerned, I tend to try to be either funny or eloquent in my updates. Cancer is not either of those things. Cancer is not funny. Cancer is not eloquent. Cancer is scary. Cancer is a bully. Cancer makes you question everything. I know that it's not my job to decide anyone's fate. I don't even believe in the death penalty. But... it is hard to understand why there are terrible people in this world who are alive and healthy and getting away with awful, awful things... and my sister - who is kind and sweet and funny, and the best mother in the entire world - has cancer. It does not make sense, and I cannot wrap my head around it sometimes. I think at this point, I'm done asking why. We'll never know why. But here is what I do know: my family is amazing.

From the moment that all of this started, there has never been a time that I was afraid Beth would not get the support that she needs. Our family has really come together to make sure that she has everything that she needs when and how and where she needs it. Even people who are my family and not her family have helped - my amazing mother-in-law came over one Saturday to help me make two weeks worth of freezer food (dinners, snacks, and breakfasts) for her to have on hand to defrost and eat, or throw in the crockpot so that her and her family will have one less thing to worry about. Whether it is watching her 3 kids so she can take a nap, setting her up right for chemo with a Nook and some super soft PJ's, flying in from out of state to be with her for a couple of days, or giving her husband a ride to work because they only have 1 car and she is tired - we have all done it without question or hesitation. Beth told me that she knows how loved she is because her phone is constantly going off now - calls and texts and Facebook messages of encouragement and offers of help and funny pictures to cheer her up. Despite what her new and terrifying truth is, these are things to be thankful for. She is thankful for them, and I am thankful for them.

We have another thing to be thankful for as well. The Good in the Bad, the Light in the Dark - my newest brother.

Beth and Garrett have been engaged since August 2012. I remember being so happy for her and them - it was two months before my wedding and I was in full on bride mode, so I was nothing short of thrilled. They have been planning a wedding for February 2014. On March 15th, they decided to get married legally at the court and still have the big party next year. At first when she was talking to me about it, it made me very, very sad. I was super bummed that she even had to think about this kind of thing (marrying legally so that he has rights if he needs them) - I was just devastated that these are the kinds of things she has to worry about now, instead of getting to enjoy being engaged the way I did and just going to bridal shows and vendor meetings and trying on big dresses, and where my biggest concern was whether or not I would be able to afford imported beer - not whether or not my partner had legal rights should the need arise in a medical setting. So I cried some, and then I got it together and got excited for her because I don't care what anyone says - even a courthouse wedding is still a wedding and what's not to be excited about? My sister is totally in love with an awesome guy who happens to be totally in love with her too, and they were finally making it official - hooray!

Because our family is so close, we wanted to be there, and they wanted us to be there, so it turned into slightly more than courthouse vows. A longtime family friend happens to be an ordained minister - he also happens to have a huge house and backyard which he very graciously offered up for this last-minute event. What family and friends managed to put together in three days was pretty incredible.

I gave Beth the dress I wore to my rehearsal dinner, and she borrowed my sparkly wedding flats and some pearl jewelry. We went shopping that Saturday to find outfits for her two daughters - her eldest picked this really pretty mint chiffon dress with fluttery little flowers on the bust and then I spent the rest of the day with her searching for the perfect matching shoes (and you'll be relieved to know we found some!) and we even managed to find a dress for the baby that matched perfectly. As a surprise for them, my husband and I decided to go to the florist who did our wedding and get a bouquet for Beth and a boutonniere for Garrett. Poor thing, you should have seen her assistant's face when I asked her on Monday if she could make me a bridal bouquet by Wednesday! I told her not to stress about it though, that I had a few pictures for her and I had no particular requests on flowers - just that I wanted it to look very springy and with soft colors, the size of a bridesmaid bouquet, and tied with a lilac ribbon. I told her that I trusted the florist completely because we had been so happy with our wedding flowers, and that she could take my inspiration photos and that they were open for interpretation. Come Wednesday when I went to pick up our order, I was delighted to find that she did not disappoint.

Inspiration.

Fruition - sorry for the terrible lighting!
A shot of the flowers and the cake - with the cake topper that I made! :)

I ran around that afternoon with my step-mom completing some last-minute errands - picking up a cake cutting set, chasing down the rings from the mailman (HA!), picking up the food and cake that she had ordered, and going to our family friend's house to set everything up. The house looked great - our friend/officiant's girlfriend had decorated the backyard with tiny lights, candles, and lots of white. Everyone started arriving, the sun set, and it was time to get started. At 8pm there in the back yard under the stars, surrounded by ~20 of their closest friends and family, with their children standing beside them, and with the smell of orange blossoms wafting over everyone, Beth and Garrett got married.

Life has been scary and intense and busy and a little bit hard to handle for the last month, but last Wednesday, March 20, 2012 - was perfect. Everyone smiled all night long. The love in the air was tangible. The support everywhere was overwhelming. The smile on my sister's beautiful face was priceless. Their children were gorgeous, as always. The tears in Garrett's eyes and the way his voice caught in his throat when he uttered the words, "in sickness and in health" were heartbreaking, but encouraging and comforting. He is an amazing father. He will be an amazing husband. He will help her through this. He will be her rock, when for so long she has been the rock for everyone else. I am glad he is her husband, and I am proud to call him my brother. I love my sister. I love my newest brother. I will never forget that night, and I am so happy that it happened, despite the reason behind it. It was beautiful.

It was the first day of spring.

Day 10 - Public Praise

Hello, ladies and gents. Today's post will be a slight change of pace from my typical ambling ramblings. This year for my Clinton, I am doing the Twelve Days of Christmas. We are on Day 10, and today's gift is Public Praise - 10 Things I Love About My Husband. Let's just jump right in to this sapfest, shall we?

1) His Sense of Humor
Clinton is hilarious. He is a major goofball. He makes me laugh all of the time without even trying. He makes me laugh even when I'm trying to be mad. It's not some kind of weird goofiness that only appeals to me, either - he makes everyone laugh! It is nearly impossible to be in a bad mood around him, because he is the master of cheering people up. Seriously - look at this face.

Can't stay mad!

Not even if you try.
Love my goofball!

2) His Style
Know what I like? A man who's not afraid of patterns. And my man is not afraid of patterns.

He also has more than 2 pairs of shoes which is more than I can say for a lot of men I know. And he even likes accessories. Boy can put an outfit together. Mmm-mmm! I can also count on him to help me decide what to wear. I'm never afraid that if I ask him which thing looks better he's just going to go, "uhh, that one honey, whatever you say". I actually trust his judgement, so that's fun!

3) He's a Foodie!
He likes to cook, and will eat anything! I am so glad that I didn't end up with a plain old meat-and-potatoes-no-greens-ever kinda guy. I love cooking and trying new recipes, and I love that he will try literally anything I make. I love that it's not just something he does because he knows I like it - he actually liked cooking before he ever met me. I probably have his mom to thank for a little bit of that! I love that he finds and wants to try recipes on his own. I love that when he cooks for me, he tries to make the plating look pretty. I love that we both enjoy watching the Food Network and seeking out the restaurants of some of our favorite chefs. Some of my favorite times with him are when we cook together. We didn't used to do it often because our old kitchen was so tiny, but now that we have a bigger one we've been cooking together more and it's nice! There might be nothing cuter than feeding your spouse a bite of whatever you're cooking with in between stirring and chopping. And kitchen kisses. Kitchen kisses are adorable.

Eating at Distrito - Chef Jose Garces' restaurant in Scottsdale, AZ.

Together at MESA Grill (our favorite restaurant) - Iron Chef Bobby Flay's restaurant in Las Vegas, NV.

I made this for dinner one night and he dove right in. Not something you can count on every guy to do!

That's my husband's hand holding that fresh made pasta!

4) Our Shared Interests
Movies, hiking, cooking, UFC/MMA, music, family BBQs! The things that I love to do, he loves to do too. I love that we don't have to force our interests on each other. There are, of course, things that we enjoy doing w/out each other too, but it's good to have these common interests so that every time we do something together, it's not something the other one loves exclusively.

Together at a UFC Expo in Las Vegas, NV.

Together at UFC 104 in Los Angeles, CA.

Rise Against concert in Tempe, AZ.

All American Rejects concert in Tempe, AZ.

Pre-screening of 'The Campaign' in Phoenix, AZ.

After a day of hiking/exploring Montezuma Castle, Montezuma Well, and Tuzigoot.

Together on one of our yearly baseball trips.

5) His Butt
It is cute.

6) His Unwavering Kindness
He is literally the nicest person I know. Sometimes I think I am not a super nice person. I am grumpy and can get judge-y sometimes and I'm not always the best at being positive. I'm a better person because of him - I've slowly tried to become a nicer person so that he can be with the type of girl he deserves. When I get grumpy and negative, I have him there to point out the good things to me - even when they're not the things I want to hear, they're the things I need to hear. He's also incredibly giving, selfless, and so sweet. He would do anything anything for anyone, seriously. He is always thinking of others, and how he can make other people's lives better.

7) Big Softie.
He is a romantic. He might tell you otherwise, but he totally is. I can prove it!

I wasn't the only one who cried ALL DAMN DAY on our wedding day!

8) His Family Matters.
I could not possibly have asked for a better person to start a family with. I have 5 sisters, 2 brothers, 4 brothers-in-law, 2 sets of parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, and thirteen nieces and nephews. He made an effort early on to learn everyone's names (long before meeting them all) so he could follow my stories. He got along with all of my family instantly (not surprising - everyone who meets him loves him!) and actually tried.
He never played the part of the boyfriend who sits in the corner and only talks football. He engages everyone all of the time and talks to all of my sisters/brothers/parents/nieces and nephews individually and knows their personalities, what they like, what they don't like, and how to talk to them. Every time we are around them, he plays with all of my nieces. Just recently at my nephew's birthday party he played 'Mother May I' with 3 of them. He lets them jump all over him and laughs while it happens. He lets them decorate him with tinsel. He plays video games and basketball and football with my nephews and lets them talk to him about girls. My youngest brother (who is not really that young anymore) couldn't wait for us to get married so that he could officially call Clinton his big brother.
He is very family-oriented. We see both our families often. He's very close with his mother and his father. He is so respectful of his mom, it is adorable. His dad is one of his best friends and he spends time with him often. He is always making sure that his brother and sister and his niece are doing alright.
I've never had to worry about either one of us going "uggghhh, not the in-laws!" because we both get along with each other's families so well, and I know that his personality is a big part of that.

9) He Accepts Me
Nobody knows me like he does. When I get to be in a bad mood, he knows that I am probably just hungry or tired (yes, I am a big baby) and laughs and says we need to get me some lunch. He can tell when I'm upset or sick even before I can a lot of times, and he knows what I need (and what I don't need) when I'm not feeling well. He always knows what I want or need, even when I don't have the foresight to ask for it. He has seen me at my best, but he has also seen me at my worst. I am feisty and tempermental and stubborn and I probably don't deserv him, but he loves me in spite of myself. He loves me when I'm good, and he manages to still love me when I'm bad. We should all be so lucky.

10) He is My Rock
There is nothing so important in this life as having a solid support system. I am blessed enough to have many supportive friends and family members to count on. I am even more blessed in that I have a partner for life that will always support me, no matter what. He has my back 100% in anything that I do. When I doubt myself, he encourages me and gives me the confidence boost I need. I will never feel alone for as long as I have him. He is steadfast and strong and I am incredibly proud to call him mine.

Saturday, October 6, 2012 - Part One (Lead-Up, Getting Ready, Pre-Ceremony)

Something awesome happened. I got married! It's been almost 3 weeks and it simultaneously feels like it happened just yesterday and like it happened a lifetime ago. The day was amazing. Everyone says that and you kind of never believe that it's as perfect as they say it was, but it is. Even if things go wrong, you are marrying the love of your life. There's nothing about that that isn't perfect. Nothing.

In the days leading up to the wedding I was incredibly stressed out. Stressed about money, vendors, people asking me ridiculous questions, and a few problems that I should not have had to deal with AT ALL that got thrown at me. My out of town mom, step-dad and brother were staying with us so luckily I had my mom to lean on. I had kind of a breakdown on Thursday and I'm really glad that she was there to let me cry and rub my back. Something really stupid happened and it just made all of my stress come out at once and you know what, no matter how old you are, sometimes you just need your mom to stand next to you while you cry in your bathroom.

Friday morning I woke up at around 5am and felt so sick. I felt dizzy and nauseated and considered staying in bed really late but I knew that wouldn't help since it was all from anxiety. I decided to get up and go for a walk. I basically just walked around my apartment complex for 2.5 hours watching the sun come up and feeling the change in the air. I was texting my best friend who works overnights so he was up and we were talking about things that had 0 to do with the wedding. I got a really sweet text from my father-in-law. I listened to whatever music my little heart desired. I could have kept walking but I decided I should probably go home when Clinton asked where I was and I didn't want to ignore everyone once they were up. I felt a lot better after that - I sort of just let everything go on that walk. I decided that there were things that were beyond my control and that I just had to stop stressing out and enjoy the weekend. There were a lot of errands to run that day and I was so thankful to have my family there to help with that. In the afternoon when we were packing up the cars with everything to drive the city where we were spending the weekend, my mom said that it was the first time that week she had seen me smiling and excited, so obviously the walk helped, and there was a definite change in tone - I was just really excited to get things started.

Friday night when we arrived for set-up and rehearsal the garden where our ceremony was scheduled was completely flooded. Some pipe had burst or something and flooded the entire lawn where all of the guest chairs were to be set up. Surprisingly enough, I did not freak out. There was a guy there backwashing the water and the venue staff assured me that it would be taken care of, so I kind of just had to trust in that. I enjoyed Friday night because it was the first time that everyone in our wedding party and our families had all been together due to us including several out-of-staters - it was really nice to be around everyone at once. We all ate an enormous BBQ dinner hosted by my parents at Famous Dave's and then Clinton and I thanked everyone and handed out wedding party/parent gifts. We spent so much time looking for/picking out/ordering gifts and trying to find a balance between something that would remind them of the wedding, and something personal that they would actually like/want to use, and I think that it was a success. Everyone seemed to really enjoy what we got them, so I was super happy about that.

After the dinner everyone went their separate ways, including my groom, who went out with all his old high school buddies that he is still friends with. If you're wondering if they had fun, perhaps this picture one of them snapped will answer your question:

bahahahaha
While the boys were being the exact same boys that they have always been (teehee) I was having a meetup with a few of my friends who came from alllllll over the place to go to my wedding. Seriously - 3 from Europe, one from Ohio, and two from California. I wasn't sure if we would have time to get together that weekend but I'm so glad that I got to spend that time with them! They were all staying in the same hotel as me so that was nice - when I decided around 1am that I really needed to go get some sleep, all I had to do was go up a couple of floors to go to bed.

Saturday morning dawned DARK and early. As in, I woke up at 430am. And then laid there quietly in the dark trying not to wake anyone (crashed with my mom, step-dad and little brother the night before) until like 7am. There is really no way to describe the feeling you get when you wake up knowing that it is your wedding day. It's exciting and scary and unlike anything else you've ever felt. I waited until morning of to write in Clinton's card - it was so cute. On the front there was a picture of Lady and Tramp - you know, the iconic one with the spaghetti - in blue tones, and on the inside, all it said was "I just knew." I can't remember exactly what I wrote - I wanted it to be honest and raw and pure which is why I waited until that morning. I sat down at the desk and wrote in it, sealed it up, and put it in my go-bag with his gift, and that's when things started to feel real. I looked at my dress hanging on the door. I looked at my brother playing LEGO on the floor. And then I got the World's Cutest Text from Clinton that said, "Good morning wifey! Today is going to be so fun. I am so excited. Eeeeee!" If there's a better way to start off the dawn of your wedding day, I don't know what it is.

The rest of the morning is a bit of a blur. I went down with my mom (and possibly my brother and step-dad? I can't even remember) to get the hotel breakfast. I might have seen people I know down there but again, I can't remember. I pushed around the food on my plate partly because I was nervous, and partly because it tasted weird. I wasn't concerned with eating a large breakfast - large meals make me sick and I didn't intend to eat a full meal all day - I had a whole bunch of snacks (fruit, veg, half sandwiches) in the refrigerator in my hotel room to eat every couple of hours to keep my sugars and energy up. I remembered last minute that we hadn't brought anything to cut the cake so my step-dad saved the day and ran out to find me one. At some point I moved all of my things from my parents' room to the room Clinton and I had for the night so I could get ready in there. I changed into my rhinestone bedazzled "Bride" tank top and robe (hey, you only get to do this once, right, so why not go all out!) and tried to stay relaxed while getting myself ready for hair and make-up. I was SUPPOSED to do my mom's hair but unfortunately the styles I had picked ended up not working AT ALL and I was getting flustered, so in the end she just put it half up which I actually think was better, because she is beautiful and looked like herself. :)

Soon, my amazing sister Jacque came to my room to beautify me. My sister does not do this for a living, but she is AMAZING at hair and make-up. I am so blessed to have someone like her to do that for me! I felt so much more comfortable with it being someone so close to me - she knows how I look everyday and knew that I didn't want to look like a different person. My friend/photographer (Tea) showed up about 1/2way through the hair process.

Once my hair was done, mom left to go get ready. Jacque finished up my makeup while Tea took photos of us and of my dress. Also, a funny thing happened - we could see the pool from my room and some of my friends from the night before were down there so I texted that I could see them - then they texted back that they got a sneak preview of my dress hanging in the window! I was keeping my dress secret but I wasn't upset because a dress hanging in a window 4 stories above you definitely doesn't give much away, I just thought it was a kinda cute thing.

My sister finished up and left, my mom came back, and it was time to go. We had a bit of a snafu here - I had thought that Clinton left me the car at my hotel and would be riding with his people to the venue, but it turned out that our car was with him at the other hotel! Unfortunately I had been planning to transport some people, so we had a last minute shuffle where I crammed in with my parents and Tea (seriously, she is amazing in every way) rescued me by having her husband get ready really quickly so he could drive a couple people. When we got to the venue, the ground was still a little wet from the night before - I didn't know all the details until later, but Clinton had gone to check earlier in the day and there were still 2 inches of standing water so he flipped out on the owner and got it fixed, thank goodness! Again though, I figured there was nothing I could really do at that point, so I had to just deal with it. My DJ was already there (seriously if anyone in AZ is looking for a DJ let me know and I will give you his info, this guy was awesome) and getting a feel for things - he came up to me quickly to ask a question about the processional and apologized profusely for asking me questions on my wedding day haha, but it was no big deal, he was just trying to make sure things were exactly as I wanted them. I sort of ran around the venue for a little bit just double checking the tables and signing off on the floral delivery and putting out a couple of last-minute things, and then it was time to hide from everyone in my bridal room with all of our flowers.

If Clinton had said to me that he wanted to abandon a traditional part of the wedding, I would have been open to it. We didn't want to include traditions for the sake of tradition - Neither one of us like cake, so we decided to only have a tiny one for pictures of the cutting and instead have a gelato bar for dessert. We also didn't include any "ceremonies" (sand, hand fasting, etc) or readings within our ceremony even though everyone else seems to. The one thing that neither of us was willing to budge on was not seeing each other between leaving the rehearsal dinner and walking down the aisle. I know that people do a First Look now to have extra time for photos and a lot of people don't care if they see each other before, but this was something we absolutely would not bend on, and I'm so glad we did it that way. SO, because of this, I spent just over an hour hiding in my little bridal suite! I know that doesn't sound like a long time, but it felt like an eternity. People (Step-mom, mother-in-law, sisters) were coming in and out, I could hear people walking around outside and in the building just outside my door - when my mom or one of my bridesmaids or the videographer would come in or go out I would catch glimpses of people and want to say hi to them but also worry that they might see me! I sort of just sat on the couch and waited and ate a little bit of fruit and watched my bridesmaids and Day of Coordinator steam my dress.

It's a surreal feeling and I found that you actually miss a LOT of the day as the bride - there's so much going on but you're tucked away and in your own little world. Getting the photos back has helped fill in some holes - it was really neat to look at things that I wasn't a part of and see a different view of the day.

I was mostly calm all day, and at one point when I did get nervous my bridesmaid Tori sat next to me and said some words that I (obviously) can't remember and calmed me down. I laughed and told her thanks for being such a bridesmaid and giving me the obligatory pep talk. Soon after, I sent Tea and Krystal (MOH) over to the boys' room to give Clinton his wedding day gift. I got him custom white gold Dallas Maverick's cufflinks. The cufflinks were cool, but they were nothing compared to the packaging. It is a long, convoluted, incredibly sappy story, but in our relationship, those holiday Hostess fruitcakes are very important. Fruitcake is a super romantic thing to us which I know sounds incredibly ridiculous, but it's true. So, knowing that, I found a vintage Hostess fruitcake tin on Ebay. I actually lost 3 separate auctions for this, but I finally won the last one, and I was so excited that I cried haha. I filled it with packing peanuts and placed the box atop them. I know that an old, beat up tin might look really weird to some people, but for us, it was about the most romantic thing I could have possibly done.

A few minutes later Krystal and Tea returned, this time with Clinton's best man Robert. He said that my present did its job - that he teared up and got emotional. They said that at first he didn't get the tin so they told him to look at it more closely and then he cried. Hearing that, of course, made me cry a little bit. I got it together and Robert said that Clinton felt really bad because my gift was wrapped all nicely and had a card, and that he didn't have any of that, just had a box. He handed me a small silver box and I joked that I had totally won in the presentation category (lol), then I opened the box and inside was a custom copper ring. There's no secret reason behind this - I just really love copper and always want copper jewelery but can never find any - BUT I looked at it and noticed there was an engraving and I just lost it because it had our little inside phrase "Fruitcake Happened" engraved in it. Being on exactly the same page made me so emotional - we hadn't previously discussed incorporating fruitcake, but we both did it anyway in the most private part of the day. It was like a scene out of a movie - I was ugly crying, trying to stop because I didn't want to mess up my make-up, people were using their hands to fan my face... I was a mess. And I wanted so badly to see him, to hug him, to have just a breath of him, but I knew that I had to wait.

Finally, at long last, it was time to put the dress on. First, I kicked everyone out so that I could change into my special wedding day undies. I had some that had a little ruffled veil on the bum =P When that was done, my mom, Tea, Tori, and Krystal (my other bridesmaid is a dude, so he was not invited haha) came in to help me. Again, this is one of those things that I don't have a clear memory of. I mean, obviously I got into the dress and someone (or more than one someone) zipped me up and buttoned the million buttons. [ETA: Photos show that it was Krystal and my mom who did all the buttons.] I think my mom laughed and made a joke about how long it would take Clinton to help me get my dress off that night. I know that the videographer had said earlier in the day that he wanted to come in to get a shot of them buttoning me up but I honestly don't remember if he was actually there or not.

Once the dress was on I put on my earrings and right-hand ring, had help putting on my bracelet, FORGOT TO PUT ON MY GARTER SET! (more on that later), my sister came in to fasten my veil, and I stood in front of the mirror and cried a little bit. Jacque told me I better stop crying because we didn't have time to fix my makeup (LOL) and then she started tearing up and everyone said how beautiful I was, and I felt amazing, and so excited, and surrounded by love. Krystal and Tori left to go meet their partner attendants and get everyone lined up and my mom and I had a moment alone. She read me a couple of passages and then prayed over me and my marriage and gave me a small book. In that moment and the few seconds after I was incredibly calm, and then I stood up and saw everyone standing outside and had the TEENIEST of panic attacks - I made my mom leave for like 2 minutes but I was fine, I just needed a second to calm myself. Right after that, it was sort of an exchange of parents - my Day of Coordinator asked if I was ready for dad, and took my mom to line up to get ready to walk out with everyone else.

Dad came into my room and looked at me and cried and asked me how I was. I can't remember exact words, I just remember thinking that he looked so handsome, and that there was nobody else I would rather have next to me at that moment. We had to wait inside for a few minutes while the processional was starting and I was SO DAMN NERVOUS about all of the people waiting, and just SO ready to walk outside and see my groom. The DOC said that she would come and get us when it was time to walk, but I got too antsy and nervous about her not coming to get us - I needed to hear the music because I had it timed so that I knew exactly when we needed to walk out from behind the tree hiding us to make our way down the aisle. (As a small aside, the song that we walked to was Craig Armstrong's "Portuguese Love Theme" from the movie Love Actually. If you've got a few minutes and would like to listen to it, you can do so here). So I didn't listen to her about the waiting and we walked out of my room to the big French doors opening up onto the patio where the bridal party was lined up. As soon as I saw everyone and how beautiful they all were, all nervousness left me. I said, probably a little too loudly, "aww, everyone looks so NICE!" and then they all turned around and noticed me haha, but that's okay. Everyone said how beautiful I was and I watched our closest friends and family proceed down and around the corner one by one until finally, dad and I were the only ones left.

I stood there for a moment clinging to my daddy's arm, listening to the music, aware that all of the planning of the last 15 months was done. I was about to walk down the aisle and see Clinton's perfect face, and get married to the goddamn love of my life. Nearly 9 years had led to this moment and I could not have been more ready. I had fleeting images of our relationship - the first conversation we ever had, the silly prank calls he used to make to me, his olive green tie and grey slacks. Hugs in the parking lot and standing in a cone of light under the streetlamp with the snow falling and sticking to his eyelashes and watching Super Troopers and eating chicken nuggets at 3am on his beat up old futon. I peench, Fruitcake Happened, Lil Guy and Lil Fella. A kiss on the dock, the key to our first apartment, and a million and one laughs. And then, suddenly, I heard the part of the song that was my cue. I took a deep breath, nudged my dad, and we started our walk down the long, long aisle.
